Today I was told that I was accepted as one of three teaching assistants who will be helping out at Sheridan this coming school year. Duties will include helping with class demos in both hot and cold shops, and I also plan on applying to TA in hot casting area.

The other two people selected for the position are fellow 2006 glass graduates Tara Gilchrist and Jake Raynard. I'm excited to be heading back to the Sheridan studio and have spent the summer working out what to make while there. I will post more sketches and photos of the work as it is completed.

Personal
This month's issue of Salon Magazine contains an article based on my cutting my hair for charity. Mid-way through my first year at Sheridan I decided to stop cutting my hair. As a child I had long hair and wanted to revisit what it felt like. After two and a half years I had amassed quite a large amount of it and felt it was time once again for a change. My aunt and uncle both work in the hair industry so I asked them to find a hair dresser to cut and donate my hair. We chose David Hillis Salon and Spa because they donate hair to Medical Image, a place that makes wigs for children with caner.

You can see process shots as well as the article here.

Career
I have just begun a collaboration with Einav Mekori, fellow Sheridan grad and current Harboutfront glass studio resident. The idea came when we discovered a mutual fascination with curtains and their relation to glass.

Our first meeting was a success and the drawings and ideas we found have only increased our want to do this project. No deadline has been decided on yet, but I hope to post photos and drawings as we progress.

Keeping with my plan to get my BFA and Masters in glass I've been researching the glass program at the University of Sunderland in the north of England. I met the head of the program while attending the Glass Art Society's annual conference, held this past June in St. Louis. So far this looks like the school I will be attending although there are still some kinks to work out.

Some minor changes made to website.

On the 20th of September is the Lakeshore Law Bowl-A-Thon and Silent Auction organized by the Law Office of Martin and Hillyer. All money raised through the auction will go towards The Victorian Order of Nurses.

The auction features donations from artists, crafts people as well as sporting goods and other things from different companies in Burlington and the surrounding area.

I've donated this piece and am glad to be able to use my art to help out such a worthy cause.

For more information on donated works, times, location etc. e-mail Julia Hillyer at glassylass@msn.com.

I recently found out that I am a finalist for the Glass Graduate Show at Gallerie Elena Lee in Montreal. Apparently the show has thirteen graduates from Sheridan College, The Alberta College of Art and Design, and Espace Verre in Quebec. The show will take place in March of 2007 and myself along with several other finalists from Sheridan will be there for the opening. I can't wait.

Well so far the update hasn't happened. I've been doing bits and pieces, but haven't actualy uploaded anything. I am however working on some new work, and will post pictures when I get a chance to take them. I'm excited though, they look really good and have got me thinking of new ideas.
